Issue 108 - Summer

East Lothian Life

Issue 108, summer 2019

Celebrating 30 years of publication.

Summer in East Lothian what’s not to enjoy! Be enchanted by the many delights of East Lothian and all it has to offer. Soak up its stunning scenery, its historic atmosphere and its wonderful architecture. History and a sense of place and peace are never far away in East Lothian.

We are a friendly, passionate and innovative county which, each summer, boasts a spectacular programme of events, welcoming locals and visitors alike. The marquees will rise, the seats will be set out, the sound systems installed and the various shows will begin from the international North Berwick Highland Games to village flower shows and everything in between. Art exhibitions, museums, Haddington Farmers’ Market, stylish traditional shopping outlets all weave their magic along our stunning coastline and inland through the countryside, with an energy and vibrancy, unique to East Lothian

Sporting legends and inspiring women fill the pages of the summer issue of East Lothian Life. Ailsa Fortune visits Gullane House, whose owners are opening their spectacular garden on 22 and 23 June, as part of Scotland’s Gardens Scheme. Allen Skinner climbs North Berwick Law in Muddy Boots; whilst Stuart Macpherson reflects on his golfing abilities. Local artist, Helen Wyllie tells us about herself and her obsession with the Bass Rock and Sheila Sims invites us all to view some very special Roman silver. It can be easy to rush through life without stopping to notice what is going on around about us, a habit we all tend to fall into. Jennifer Sharp reminds us to incorporate ‘mindfulness’ into our daily activities which can help us enjoy life more and understand ourselves better.

If you’re after a quick bite to eat or a three course meal with all the trimmings, the county’s dining scene doesn’t disappoint. There is so much to choose from and don’t forget our locally grown ingredients, many of which can be included in our easy, fresh and healthy salad recipes which can be on your dinner table in no time!

As always, East Lothian Life carries wide ranging and inspirational articles, which reflect the diversity of this wonderful county and the people who have influenced its development and who continue to shape its future.

Enjoy the summer months in East Lothian.
