Issue 114 - Summer

East Lothian Life

Issue 114, summer 2021

Summertime is here and doesn’t our wonderful county look gorgeous. The ever-changing light and bright blue skies have a quality all of their own. The sparkling sea along the East Lothian coast-line; the lush green of our countryside; the ripening crops and our colourful gardens, all add to the hazy days of summer. Not forgetting our picturesque towns and villages, which are once again bustling with life. It’s been a tough few months for many of us and our local shops and businesses need your support, so please shop local. I for one cannot thank them enough for their support of East Lothian Life.

East Lothian Life continues to grow and I am always delighted to receive your feedback and suggestions for articles. Remember East Lothian Life is your magazine and aims to reflect your interests. The varied articles and stunning photographs I receive from my contributors provide a glimpse into the myriad activities taking place in the county. Among the captivating topics in this issue is Rosemary Everett’s insight into the mysteries Book Art and her experience in the Tower Studio at Marchmont. Ailsa Fortune uncovers a long history connected with The Lodge in Aberlady and also brings us the remarkable story of Mary Nisbet and her involvement with the Parthenon (Elgin) Marbles. Sir Hew Dalrymple shares the contents of some touching letters between two of his forebears in Absence and Fond Hearts. Lindsay Brown finds time in her busy farming life to record the daily activities of our hard working farmers, who keep our countryside in such good repair. Richard English looks at the unlikely unsung heroes of our East Lothian Biodiversity and how important insects are to a well-functioning ecosystem and Bob Randall continues his trek along the A1. We have summer motoring, a little music, drinks from the wine cellar, some retro recipes to try out, antiques to admire and so much more for you to read, enjoy and discover.

I hope that East Lothian Life will inspire you to rediscover our wonderful county and to step out and visit sites that have been closed over the Covid crisis and what better time to do this than during the summer months when East Lothian basks in all its glory.
